WHITE ALLIES, anyone who wonders why POC make a big deal about being discriminated against, or just anyone who’s interested, PLEASE WATCH THIS VIDEO. AND REMEMBER THE NAME… JANE ELLIOT. White allies watch and observe how Jane rolls.
fifty whole minutes of White People Not Getting The Point
noooo but oh my god that one lady in the middle went right down the bingo cardtho like
- "no i AM hearing you but you don’t understand ME
- "stop and search happens to ALL kinds of people"
- "you’re just giving STATISTICS and ISOLATED INCIDENTS”
- "it’s not ALL ABOUT YOU you know you’re not SPECIAL"
- "there are MORE IMPORTANT THINGS going on right now"
- "what i’d like to know is WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO ACTUALLY DO ABOUT IT”
like jesus christ woman you’re a poster child for ear-clogged ignorance
and my personal favorite:
"I’m afraid to pick my daughter up from school because the kids and teachers might treat her differently if they know her father is black and by extension she is also black"
"Oh my god when my husband has to pick my kids up he has to dress nicely!! You have to look respectable, this isn’t about race!!!!"
Ah yes being black is the same as choosing to wear your most beat-up clothes thank you for that. I’m sure all black people can just change into their white skin so they’re more respectable. Wait
STOP WHAT YOU’RE DOING AND WATCH THIS. You’re not doing anything more important than watching this, right now, especially if you’re white.
nope. but sometimes shit happens and there’s nothing you can do about it.
Ten Characters [1/10] → Éowyn"No living man am I! You look upon a woman! Éowyn am I, Éomund’s daughter. Begone if you be not deathless! For living or dark undead, I will smite you, if you touch him!"
i never have liked the “just girly things” series.
So, this is awesome.
So, there are a number of things wrong with this.
All right, you don’t like the “just girly things” series. That’s perfectly your right. However, the main thing that strikes me here is that, by comparing the posts to photographs of war tragedies, you are basically saying “how dare teenage girls be upset when all this horrible stuff is happening in the world/has happened in the past”. That’s not OK.
The wars were terrible. War is terrible. We all know this. But that doesn’t change the fact that falling out with friends is terrible. That feeling as though you’re all alone is terrible. No, this isn’t comparable with the horrors of war. Not at all.
So why are you comparing them?
The tragedies illustrated in this post are heartbreaking, but you should not be appropriating said tragedies in order to shame teenage girls and what you clearly see as their “silly” problems. Regardless of what you may think, the problems faced when you’re a teenager are serious. They can feel like the end of the world. Remembering the Holocaust isn’t going to magically make you feel better about your own situation, because it doesn’t work like that. All this photoset says to teenage girls is “shut the fuck up, girls, you don’t have real problems”. That’s invalidating and it’s really horrible behaviour.
Moving on to address the pictures that don’t rely on emotional manipulation and invalidation: are you honestly comparing a girl wanting some new jewelry to the abuse of people? Are you really associating a fun beach visit with a friend to storming the beaches at Normandy? What are you trying to say? That whenever a girl visits the beach, she should be thinking about D-Day? That she shouldn’t want jewelry because some people are bound in chains? That when she says “everything happens for a reason” in regards to her own life and her own experiences, she’s saying “hey, war’s OK!”? I fail to understand what you’re doing by associating these horrific pictures with innocent enjoyments from a girl’s teenage years, aside from continuing to say “how dare you be happy and enjoy things, when this has happened/is happening”.
According to this post, teenage girls aren’t allowed to be happy because there’s tragedy in the world, and they’re not allowed to be sad because there’s tragedy in the world. This post implies that their suffering isn’t real, that they’re silly and superficial, and that they should spend their lives thinking about all the horrors that have happened.
Newsflash: it’s perfectly possible to have your own emotional problems in your personal life and be capable of empathy for the tragedies that befall other people. Maybe you should think about this before shaming teenage girls for feeling things with graphic photographs of war and death.
reblogging for commentary. Stop shaming teenage girls just for being teenage girls.
WOW THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT I JUST SAID ONLY IT’S EXPLAINED SO MUCH BETTER.
Reblogging this again for that A+ commentary!
Let’s file this under “I don’t know what the fuck this is but I like it.”
Something that better happen in season 9.
